Satanic (2016/Magnolia/MagNet Blu-ray)

Picture: B+ Sound: B+ Extras: C Film: C

Jeffrey Hunt's 2016 spooky horror film Satanic lands on disc with Modern Family star Sarah Hyland in the lead. A victim of 'too many pretty faces', the film has a few moments but ultimately suffers from mediocre acting from the supporting cast, though Hyland does her best. Decent cinematography, including sweeping aerial shots of Los Angeles up the production value and put it a beat above other indies, but ultimately it feels a little heavier than an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? The film also stars Justin Chon, Steven Krueger, Clara Mamet, Sophie Dalah, and Anthony Carrigan to name a few.

Set in modern day LA, a group of friends go to town for a weekend getaway and end up summoning a satanic spirit after following a Cult Store owner home. Once she kills herself in the name of the ritual, the group of friends end up becoming infested one by one by the dark spirits.

Presented in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1, the image looks pretty sharp on the film. Even darker scenes have plenty of detail and those that take place during the sunny days in California also have a lot of texture. The sound mix is satisfactory as well with a DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 lossless track that backs up the nice score and evens the dialogue throughout with no visible flaws.
