Frank
Capra's classic 1936 film Mr.
Deeds Goes To Town
(as known as Opera
Hat
and A
Gentlemen Goes to Town)
lands on Blu-ray disc in this highly collectible edition from Sony
that boasts a new remastered presentation, many cool extras that film
historians and cinephiles will want to check out. The film stars
Gary Cooper, Jean Arthur, H.B. Warner, and Ruth Donnelly to name a
few. It's no mystery to today's audience that the film was horribly
reimagined by Adam Sandler some years ago. I would say to put that
film out of your mind when watching this one.
Longfellow
Deeds (Cooper) lives in a small town, leading a small town tuba
playing kind of life and not bothered by the complexity of big city
living. When a relative dies and leaves Deeds a fortune, Longfellow
picks up his tuba and moves to the big city where everybody and their
brother (including a newspaper) tries to get a piece of his fortune.
Smarter than most, Mr. Deeds stays on top until he meets a gorgeous
reporter named Babe Bennett (Arthur) who finds her way into his heart
and his wallet.
The
film looks pretty sharp on Blu-ray for the most part with a full
restored and 4K remastered 1080p high definition transfer and a black
and white 1.33:1 full frame presentation. The thing that slightly
bugged me when watching were the high levels of noticeable grain
throughout (which I know is a trait of old film, but some of the
materials may be down a generation) at some darker scenes - it was
more noticeable than others. The sound is mixed in a lossless
English Mono DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) track in various languages that
sounds as good as the film ever has with little complaints in that
department. If this is a favorite film of yours, then I would
suggest upgrading to this release for a superior presentation
overall.

A
nice release of a classic, I would suggest this film to fans of old
films and black and white romantic adventures.
