The Infiltrator (2016/Broadgreen Blu-ray)

Picture: B Sound: B Extras: C+ Film: C+

Bryan Cranston has been one of Hollywood's most sought after actors after his groundbreaking performance in Breaking Bad, though he is running of the risk of being typecast making so many roles dealing with drug dealers. Here he stars as Federal Agent Bob Mazur (based on a true story) in Brad Furman's The Infiltrator (2016) - who successfully went undercover and infiltrated Pablo Escobar's drug trafficking scene in 1986 by posing as a businessman. While not quite as interesting as Johnny Depp's Blow, the film features some interesting scenes that puts the audience in the hot seat... with each passing scene putting our hero more in question and in fear of being exposed.

Getting raves from many critics, I found the film to be nothing new in the thriller genre. The concept of a cop posing as a criminal as been played out several times before. If it wasn't for the true story angle and the great performances, I would have probably rated the film lower. Still, if this type of film is your cup of tea or if you are a fan of Cranston, you will probably enjoy it more than I did. The film also stars the beautiful Diane Kruger (as the femme fatale), an interesting performance by John Leguizamo, Benjamin Bratt, Amy Ryan, and foreign actor Said Taghmaoui to name a few.

Presented in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1, the film looks great on disc with highly textured detail and rich colors. The film doesn't go too crazy with colors and mostly has a realistic look, but the bump up in contrast definitely helps. The sound mix is pretty strong as well with a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track that is even throughout and heavy on scenes with action.
