Clint
Eastwood's often overlooked 1997 thriller Midnight in the Garden
of Good and Evil is an exquisitely executed work starring Kevin
Spacey and John Cusack amongst a host of other recognizable faces.
Based on the book by John Berendt, with a screenplay by John Lee
Hancock, the story is also based on real people, as explored in one
of the new bonus features. If you've haven't seen the film or want
to revisit it, now is the perfect time as it is available on high
definition Blu-ray from Warner Archive with some great extras.
The
film also stars Jude Law, Jack Thompson, Paul Hipp, and Alison
Eastwood among others.
Cusack
plays John Kelso, an author who was chosen to write a magazine
article on the Christmas Party of a Georgia based millionaire named
Jim Williams (Spacey.) Enthralled by the odd culture of the town,
Kelso befriends Williams just before he murders Billy Hanson (Law) in
an act of self defense. In an attempt to uncover the clues before
the motive of the murder, Kelso ends up writing a book about the case
and ends up getting closer to Williams and a town full of other
unusual characters in the process of writing.
The
new 1080p high definition transfer looks fantastic here with
incredible detail throughout the film. Shot in a widescreen aspect
ratio of 1.85:1 on 35mm film, it's never looked better than it does
right here on Blu-ray disc. Night tones are perfectly balanced as
are day scenes. The sound mix is equally as impressive with a DTS-HD
MA (Master Audio) 5.1 lossless mix that leaves little to gripe about.
Special
Features include...
The
Real People in the Garden - Interviews with the people depicted
in the book and movie

An
interesting film from the widely diverse filmography of Director
Clint Eastwood that is a must-watch if you're a fan, and in many
ways, reminds me of his Academy Award Winning film Mystic River.
