Dark Water (2002/MVD Visual/Arrow Blu-ray w/DVD)

Picture: B/B- Sound: B+/B Extras: B Film: B+

One of the best ghost movies of the new millennia lands on Blu-ray in this amazing new release from Arrow Films, issued by Halloween 2016! Forget the 2005 Jennifer Connelly remake, the original 2002 J-Horror film Dark Water is creepy and gripping from frame one to close. Arrow Films pulls out all the stops for this release, bringing us a beautiful (if controversial) new high definition transfer and some pretty new cool extras to accompany. From the director of Ringu and its sequels (the original Ring) Hideo Nakata, this film is a must watch if you are a fan of 'Dead Wet Girl' horror flicks.

Dark Water stars Hitomi Kuroki, Rio Kanno, Mirei Oguchi, and Asami Mizukawa to name a few.

A mother named Yoshimi and her young daughter Ikuko move into a dilapidated apartment complex when they soon notice water leaks forming and growing all around. A series of strange things start happening and they soon realize that a dark entity has possessed the property, has some pretty insidious intentions that link back to a terrifying accidental death.

Presented in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 (which sone on line are questioning the integrity of, but more on that later when we find out more) and a DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) lossless 5.1 audio mix that brings the film to life namely in tense moments where the ghost girl is omnipresent. Thus, this Blu-ray release looks and sounds far better than previous releases of the film on other formats. The DVD standard definition version is also included with a 5.1 audio track that looks and sounds fine for the format.

Special Features include...

  • Brand new interview with director Hideo Nakata

  • Brand new interview with novelist Koji Suzuki

  • Brand new interview with cinematographer Junichiro Hayashi

  • Archive interview with actress Asami Mizukawa

  • Original 'Making of' documentary

  • Trailer

  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Peter Strain

For this first pressing only, we also get an illustrated collector's booklet containing new writing by the great David Kalat, author of J-Horror: The Definitive Guide to The Ring, The Grudge and Beyond, and an examination of the American remake by writer and editor Michael Gingold.

This film is recommended for fans of ghost movies, especially ones such as The Grudge, Pulse, or The Ring films.
