The 1964 John Frankenheimer film The Train is back on Blu-ray as Twilight Time takes its fully restored, remastered and out of print release, and reissues it in another limited run as an Encore edition. This film reminded me a lot of Monuments Men in that it deals with the preservation of fine art during the World War II area.

The Train stars Burt Lancaster, Paul Scofield, Jeanne Moreau, Michel Simon, Suzanne Flon, Wolfgang Priess, and Richard Munch.

It's WWII and the Nazis have stolen many priceless works of art, planning to destroy those they deem against their sensibilities in an effort to rule with an iron fist. German Colonel Franz von Waldheim (Lancaster), is an art aficionado and as such, against the wants of the Germans in general, decides days before France will be liberated, and to bring back to Germany many of those priceless works of art from the Jeu de Paume in Paris. An elaborate plan is formulated to perfect the art and preserve the past in the process.

Black and White and 1080p HD go so together so well and the restoration transfer seen here on The Train is no exception. The film simply looks gorgeous with sharp contrast and darks and whites with a 1.66:1 aspect ratio and a English 1.0 DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) Mono lossless that makes the film pop. There is impeccable detail in backgrounds that make the film seem newer than it is. Great work here.

Great release of a while I hadn't seen before but is highly recommendable for fans of WWII pictures, thrillers, Frankenheimer and more.
