Morgan (2016/Fox 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray w/Blu-ray)

Luke Scott and his father, producer Ridley Scott (Alien) bring us Morgan - the latest entry in the 'superior being' genre which is home to other films such as Splice and Ex Machina. However, much like Splice, the film thinks its smarter than it is and ends up with a weak third act that is essentially a Hollow Man-style kill fest - with every scientist in the path of the experiment wiped out. However, Morgan does have a surprisingly clever ending that I didn't see coming that kind of redeemed it for me and does make me want to watch it again, which is rare in film these days. For sci-fi fans, this is an interesting watch but by no means will it become a classic.

Morgan stars Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones), Kate Mara (The Fantastic Four), Anya Taylor-Joy (The VVitch), Paul Giamatti (Sideways), Boyd Holbrook (Jane Got A Gun), and Toby Jones (Serena, the Captain America films) .

A group of scientists in a remote facility have created the next step in human evolution - a young girl who is called ''Morgan'' (Taylor-Joy). Though she is only five years old, she looks about twenty and has both a wide-eyed view of humanity and a violent, terrified one. When a corporate representative who specializes in 'risk management' (Mara) comes to meet Morgan after a violent outburst, she finds out that there is more to this girl than meets the eye.

In this release we get both the 4K Ultra HD disc and the Blu-ray discs - both of which look and sound fantastic. While the 4K obviously looks a bit cleaner and have even more detail, the

Blu-ray doesn't look terrible by any means. Presented in HEVC/H.265, HDR (10; Ultra HD Premium)-enhanced Ultra High Definition image on the 4K version of the film with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.39:1, the dark and shadows of the film are perfected captured along with sleek blues and blacks and impeccable skin detail. The sound mix on the 4K disc is a DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 7.1 lossless track that delivers a stunning mix. The Blu-ray presents the film in 1080p digital High Definition with the same widescreen ratio and same sound mix. The big difference between the two is in the picture. A Digital UltraViolet Copy of the film is also included.

Not as strong as Ex Machina, but better than Splice (which went a weird sexual route that didn't really work), Morgan is a familiar but interesting film that shows some talent in Luke Scott (which runs in the family). I'm definitely interested to see what he does next.
