The
classic Charles Dickens' story comes to life on film yet again in
writer/director Douglas McGrath's 2002 adaptation of Nicholas
Nickleby that is finally finding its way onto Blu-ray disc
courtesy of Twilight Time, looking and sounding better than any time
since its theatrical release. The film features an all star cast
including the fantastic Christopher Plummer, Jim Broadbent, Tom
Courtenay, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Bell, Timothy Spall, and Charlie
Hunnam (Pacific Rim, Sons of Anarchy) as Nickleby.
Young
Nicholas (Henry McGrath) and his family (Andrew Havill) enjoy a
comfortable life, until Nicholas' father dies and the family is left
penniless. Nicholas, his sister and mother venture to London to seek
help from their Uncle Ralph (Plummer), but Ralph's only intentions
are to separate the family and exploit them. Nicholas is sent to a
school run by the cruel, abusive and horridly entertaining Mr.
Wackford Squeers (Jim Broadbent). Eventually, Nicholas runs away
with schoolmate Smike (Bell), and the two set off to reunite the
Nickleby family.
Presented
in colorful 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of
2.35:1, the film looks great in remastered high definition as shot in
the Super 35mm film format. Many of the tones throughout the film
are natural and captured here in finer detail than previously
available. The sound mixes are also considerably better than
previous editions with a lossless English 5.1 DTS-HD MA (Master
Audio) track and a lossless English 2.0 DTS-HD MA (Master Audio)
track with Pro Logic surrounds, both of which sound great at home and
will help encapsulate you into the film experience. MGM/UA was
pushing this as a demo for how good DTS sounded early on, so expect
more than just the usual dialogue-based soundtrack.
