John Wick (2016/Lionsgate 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray w/Blu-ray)

Picture: A /B+ Sound: A/B+ Extras: B Film: B+

Keanu Reeves impressively portrays John Wick - a revenge driven hitman like you've never seen before. A sleeper hit upon its first release, Chad Stahelski's 2014 film finds its way onto 4K Ultra HD disc in the wake of the sequel being released into theaters. I can't say enough about the high definition presentation here on both discs - with even more detail in the 4K UHD and outstanding colors that mimic theatrical presentation at home like never before. If you haven't seen this action packed thriller yet, then you owe it to yourself is give it a watch in 4K HD.

The film also stars Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Willem Dafoe, and Dean Winters.

After the death of his loving one, assassin John Wick decides to go into retirement with a pooch that is the last namesake he has, but once some gangsters take everything from him, Wick decides to come back with a vengeance and not only attack his attackers: the real brains behind the gangster operation.

John Wick is presented in 4K (2160p with HDR (high dynamic range 10-bit color) and a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 with noticeable improvements over the still-fine-for-the-format 1080p Blu-ray disc that is also included. Some of the teal and yellow colors in the transfer pop a bit more than they do in 1080p and the blacks seem a bit more contrasty overall, giving home viewers enough of an upgrade to notice in comparison. This is one of the best HD shoots we've seen in the 4K format to date. The sound mix on both discs is in both Dolby Atmos 11.1 (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (48kHz, 24-bit) core), which makes for a really great ways to show off your home sound system. This film has tons of gunplay and action sequences, so it's really a pleasure to crank up loud and immerse yourself in the action.

John Wick was a huge leap for Keanu and really his best film since the original Matrix in 1999. His martial arts style here is more of what I would call 'gun fu', where he orchestrates violence in an almost dance at portions that are really impressive. Solid direction and cinematography make this a film I would definitely suggest action fans revisit in this new format, which the sequel was also issued in.
