The Edge Of Seventeen (2016/Universal Blu-ray w/DVD)

Picture: B+/B- Sound: B+/B- Extras: C Film: B

The Edge of Seventeen (2016) is a fun coming of age comedy/drama about a teen (Hailee Steinfeld, who made her acting debut in the Coen Brothers' True Grit remake a few years ago) struggling with finding her place amongst her peers while maintaining her sanity and struggling with the loss of her Father. Full of great performances by Woody Harrelson, Kyra Sedgwick, Blake Jenner, Haley Lu Richardson, and Katie Stuart, the film is in many ways a modern day John Hughes film and will appeal not only to teens but adults as well.

When Nadine (Steinfeld) loses her father to a heart attack, she meets a new friend in Krista (Richardson) and the two become inseparable. As the girls get older, Krista starts to develop a crush on Krista's seemingly perfect older Brother (Jenner) and when they become a 'thing', Nadine feels as if she has lost her best friend. Bonding with one of her teachers (Harrelson) who consults her on her struggling teen life and battling her now single mother (Sedgwick), Nadine finds out that growing up isn't easy and that some of her peers aren't as they seem.

The highlight of the film is without a doubt the onscreen chemistry between Harrelson and Steinfeld, which is evident in the scenes where they are one on one with each other in the classroom. The character of Nadine herself is pretty realistic and believable and gives the audience a character to both love and love to hate at some points. Still, there's no doubt that the Oscar nominated young actress Hailee Steinfeld definitely has a bright future in Hollywood, as long as she stays on the path that she is on now as she has been nominated for a Golden Globe and other awards for this performance.

The Edge of Seventeen is presented on Blu-ray disc in 1080p high definition with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and a DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 7.1 lossless track that packs a nice even presentation of the film on disc. The colors are bright and vibrant with clean cinematography and an interesting score that gives the film a edgy and stylistic feel. Also included is a DVD copy of the film in standard definition with a anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track, which is as good as is to be expected from the format. A digital UV copy is also included.

All in all, The Edge of Seventeen is a surprisingly fun film with equal parts drama and comedy that has a mass audience appeal. It is relatable to anyone who didn't quite know where to find a place in high school and features great performances all around, so this one is recommended.
