Two
fantastic documentaries on obscure B-Movie cinema by filmmaker Mark
Hartley are presented in high definition in this great double feature
Blu-ray release that cinephiles won't want to miss! Even if you've
seen both of these docs, this release is worth the price tag as it
features a staggering 315 minutes in length with both features
combined and great high definition presentations of both films.
First
up is the acclaimed documentary Electric Boogaloo: The Wild,
Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014) chronicles the wild and
varied releases of schlock titans Cannon Films, with such titles as
Operation Thunderbolt, Lemon Popsicle, Inga, Joe, Schizoid, X-Ray,
The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood, The Apple, House of the Long
Shadows, Lady Chatterley's Lover, Mata Hari, The Last American
Virgin, Death Wish II, The Wicked Lady, Enter the Ninja, Revenge of
the Ninja, Ninja III: The Domination, Sahara, Hercules, Breakin',
Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, Over the Brooklyn Bridge, Bolero,
America 3000, Missing in Action, Missing in Action 2: The Beginning,
American Ninja, Invasion U.S.A., Lifeforce, Going Bananas, Death Wish
3, Death Wish 4: The Crackdown, Otello, Love Streams, King Lear,
Barfly, Runaway Train, King Solomon's Mines, Allan Quatermain and the
Lost City of Gold, The Delta Force, Invaders from Mars, The Texas
Chainsaw Massacre 2, Over the Top, Superman IV: The Quest for Peace,
Masters of the Universe, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Cyborg,
Lambada, The Forbidden Dance, The Expendables, Olympus Has Fallen,
and Ninja to name a few prominently featured titles.
Some
of the interviewees include Olivia d'Abo, John G. Avildsen, Martine
Beswick, Richard Chamberlain, Sybil Danning, Boaz Davidson, Bo Derek,
Lucinda Dickey, Michael Dudikoff, Robert Forster, Diane Franklin,
Elliott Gould, Tobe Hooper, Just Jaeckin, Laurene Landon, Avi Lerner,
Dolph Lundgren, Franco Nero, Cassandra Peterson, Molly Ringwald,
Robin Sherwood, Marina Sirtis, Catherine Mary Stewart, Alex Winter,
David Delvalle, and Franco Zeffirelli to name a few.
As
for Machete Maidens Unleashed! (2010), Hartley explores
obscure exploitation cinema from the Philippines from the 1960's. As
told from the perspective of several amazing filmmakers, the
documentary highlights a simpler time when jungle based ''T and A''
movies reigned supreme. Similar in pace and style to Electric
Boogaloo, Machete Maidens is an interesting look at a
forgotten sub genre that exposes a wild and colorful corner of
filmmaking that many are unaware.
Machete
Maidens Unleashed! includes interviewees Allan Arkush, Judy
Brown, Colleen Camp, Roger Corman, Joe Dante, Pam Grier, Jack Hill,
John Landis, Danny Peary, Eddie Romero, Cirio H. Santiago, and Brian
Trenchard-Smith.
Presented
in 1080p high definition with a 1.77:1 widescreen aspect ratio
improvements over their DVD counterparts, the films are presented on
Blu-ray and are up to standards with both 5.1 and 2.0 English tracks
respectively. Some clips from the films themselves vary in quality,
but the interviews are lit well and stand out in clean and clear HD.
