Utawarerumono: The False Faces - Complete Collection (2015 - 2016/Season One/Sentai Blu-ray Set)

Picture: A Sound: B+ Extras: C Episodes: A-

A mysterious young man awakens to a dangerous new world with no idea where he is or even who he is. He is rescued and named Haku by Kuon, a young cat girl who takes him under her wing, teaching him the ways of life. As they journey together, Haku meets and makes new friends learning about his strange new world. They end up in the Yamato Empire where he soon becomes closely involved with it's daily life, commerce and even politics. But even in the seemly peaceful kingdom things are not what they seem and Haku has some secrets of his own in Utawarerumono: The False Faces - Complete Collection (2015 - 2016).

Haku is a mysterious young man, after being rescued from giant monsters he finds himself in a world filled with strange creatures and people with animal ears and tails. His life soon becomes closely tied in with Kuon and all their friends living in the Yamato Empire. And while he doesn't seem to worry about remembering his past, he is more concerned with living a peaceful life. Because of his calm attitude and demeanor, Haku soon proves he is a capable man when it comes to knowledge, thinking out side the box and leadership. He soon meets various princesses and leaders in the Yamato Empire and he helps them protect the nation from insurgents, corruption and all enemies ...foreign or domestic. But as he learns more about his brave new world, he also learns dark secrets in which shake the very foundations of what he thought he knew.

This was a fantasy series, at first it seems like everything is set in some fantasy world filled with swords and sorcery but later it is revealed it is Earth in the far future, in where super science has changed the world and the main character is one of the few last surviving humans. The first half of the series is fill with drama and comedy, making fun of various anime stereotypes and situations. In the second half is more serious and political and is about how the all main characters work together to save their world.

The 1080p 1.78 X 1 digital High Definition image transfers are much better than the OVA set of this franchise we reviewed a little while ago, with much better color and detail. The DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 2.0 Stereo lossless mixes are presented in decent English and slightly better Japanese versions, both offering some Pro Logic-like surrounds to match the image quality, but sounding a little better than the OVA set. Extras include Japanese shorts, clean opening and closing animations and trailers.
