Wonder Woman: Commemorative Edition (2009/DC Comics Animation/Warner Blu-ray w/DVD)

Picture: B+/B- Sound: B+/B- Extras: B Film: B

DC and Warner Bros consistently create unique and original feature-length animated films that are geared towards older audiences, with some recent hits such as this fantastic focus on Wonder Woman (2009). In recent years, the Batman animated films have been strong as well and are definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of DC Comics iconic characters.

Featuring an all star voice cast including Kerri Russell, Nathan Fillion, Rosario Dawson, Marg Heigenberger, Oliver Platt, and Virginia Madsen to name a few. In the wake of the upcoming live action version of Wonder Woman (2017) starring Gal Gadot, this re-release features new extras and a wonder transfer of this superbly animated film that may give us some clue as to the origin story plot of that film.

Serving in part as an origin story to the character, Wonder Woman (Russell) must not only meet her first romantic interest in American wise-guy Steve Trevor (Fillion), but she must go up against one of the biggest adversaries her people have ever known: Ares -The God of War himself (Platt). Freed from his imprisonment on the mystical island of Themyscira (Wonder Woman's realm), nothing can stop Ares as he wages an all out war against all of humanity. In order to stop him, Wonder Woman will not only have to learn the ways and adapt to modern day New York City, but prohibit Ares from meeting with Hades - a sinister God who can help him release powerful chains that suppress his powers. Can she and her lasso of truth save the day?

This new edition features both of the 1080p Blu-ray and standard definition DVD of the film, both of which have a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1. The Blu-ray sports a great sounding, lossless DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 track that brings a theatrical-style mix to film, however, some moments with heavy action feature a tiny bit of motion blur. Still, the animation throughout looks pretty spot on and is a huge improvement over the standard definition DVD which is included, that has a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track as well and is the same DVD we saw 8 years ago.

A digital UV copy is also included.
