The Shack (2017/Summit/Lionsgate Blu-ray w/DVD)

Picture: B+/B- Sound: B+/B- Extras: B Film: C+

There have been a string of new religious-based films coming out of Hollywood lately with The Case For Christ and The Shack being some of the bigger releases of the 2017 movie year. Packed with some big names such as Sam Worthington (Avatar), country music star Tim McGraw, and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures), The Shack opened with mixed reviews, but was a box office draw nonetheless and didn’t do too bad considering its lower budget. The film is from one of the producers of The Blind Side and is directed by Stuart Hazeldine (Paradise Lost).

The story, based on the worldwide best seller of the same name, is a Field Of Dreams-type film where a man rediscovers his faith in the midst of a tragedy. Mack (Worthington) is an honest man but is ridden with grief after a personal tragedy overturns his life. Once he gets a bizarre letter, he is drawn to an old shack in Oregon, where he mets Papa (Spencer) and two other strangers who open his life and restore his faith.

Presented in 1080p with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and a nice sounding English 5.1 DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) lossless track, the film looks great on Blu-ray disc, though not quite as impressive as a 2160p 4K presentation. Colors here are saturated and nice, as the film isn't shot half bad at all and the soundtrack and mix sound pretty crisp and clean.

Also included is a standard definition DVD with an anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 2.40:1 and a lossy Dolby Digital 5.1 track that pales in comparison.

A digital Ultraviolet copy is also included.

While at times it feels a bit like a made for TV like drama, The Shack is aimed at the religious crowd and isn't afraid to bring up some interesting theories about christianity along the way.
