3 Generations (2017/Lionsgate Blu-ray)

Picture: B+ Sound: B+ Extras: C+ Film: C+

Three iconic actresses star in Director Gaby Dellal's 3 Generations (2017), a film that touches upon the controversial topic of coming out as transgender in today's society. Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon) owns her daring role and goes as far as growing out her armpit hair and changing her looks to look as manly as possible. Susan Sarandon and Naomi Watts both co-star in the film, which also features Susan Sarandon, Tate Donovan, and Maria Dizzia.

One family spanning three generations lives under one roof and couldn't be any more different. Ray (Fanning) is a teenager who comes out as transgender and isn't happy with others identifying him as a 'she'. His single mother, Maggie (Watts), must track down Ray's biological father (Donovan) to get his legal consent to allow Ray's transition to begin, although he isn't too crazy about the idea either. While Dolly (Sarandon), who is Ray's lesbian grandmother, doesn't understand why Ray doesn't want to just be a lesbian rather than going through the complications of changing her sex. Each has their own skeleton in the closet to address, the family is only brought together by these tough decisions and acceptance that is the norm for many family's in today's America.

Presented on Blu-ray disc with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and a clear-sounding English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless track, the film is up to standards with the format and features a realistic color palette and clean filmmaking that has great character detail and beautiful shots that shine in HD.

A Digital UV copy is also included.

Deleted and Extended Scenes

The film features great performances and strong filmmaking, however it's ultimately your own point of view on the subject matter that may or may not affect your level of enjoyment. The one thing everyone is sure to agree on is Elle Fanning's top notch performance, which I would be surprised if it didn't get Academy attention come winter.
