Evil Ed (1995/MVD Visual/Arrow Limited Edition Blu-ray/DVD Set)

Picture: B+/B- Sound: B+/B- Extras: B Film: B

Swedish director Anders Jacobsson's cult classic Evil Ed (1995) lands on high definition Blu-ray and DVD thanks to Arrow in this new transfer that puts previous outings to shame. Boasting two versions of the film (the special edition cut is five minutes longer than the original) and a wealth of extras, this three disc limited edition will please and welcome in new fans as well.

The film stars Johan Rudebeck, Olof Rhodin, and Gert Flyking.

Ed was just a normal editor... until he got a job working on horror films in the ''splatter and gore'' department. After starting at violence for hours on end, Ed becomes corrupt and transforms into a vicious killer hell bent on a murderous rampage with nobody in his path safe!

While there are plenty of references to other '80s horror fare, specifically the Charles Brand Full Moon films, Vestron home video releases, and the feel of early Peter Jackson works like Dead Alive (1992) and others, the '90s film was a VHS hit and fulfills its duty as a boob filled splatter fest. If you missed this film in its initial home video release or haven't heard of it, then this is definitely worth checking out.

Arrow has done yet another fine job with the restoration of this film, sporting a great-looking 1080p high definition transfer with a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and a nice sounding English LPCM 2.0 (48kHz, 24-bit) track. Additionally, there is also a DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 lossless track on the disc as well depending on your home theater specs. This film has seen many bad transfers over the years, dating back to the dreaded quality of the VHS days (which some will argue gives the film more charm in lesser quality), here the colors are sharp and the details are strong, similar to other great restorations that Arrow has done recently, such as Brain Damage (reviewed elsewhere on this site).

A standard definition DVD of the film is also included, showing the film in an anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and a compressed LPCM track. While this isn't as impressive as the Blu-ray transfer, the film still looks pretty darn good on DVD, besting previous releases.

Special Features include...

Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Graham Humphreys

Collector's Booklet featuring new writing on the film by horror journalist Michael Gingold
