JoJo Rabbit 4K (2019/Fox 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray w/Blu-ray)

4K Ultra HD Picture: A Picture: B+ Sound: B+ Extras: B Film: B

Taika Waititi's Oscar-winning film, Jojo Rabbit (2019) lands on Blu-ray and 4K UHD disc just at the closing of awards season. The film is pretty well done and spins the perspective of Nazi Germany by making it more comedic and light hearted. It also shows growth in Waititi as a filmmaker, who is certainly getting sharper with his craft here after directing Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok and the first-season finale of Star Wars: The Mandalorian, amongst other efforts. Here he uses clever blocking and camerawork to tell an effective, original, and occasionally controversial story.

The story centers around Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis) who has been conditioned to be in favor of the Nazi ideology and sees Adolf Hitler as an imaginary friend (also played by Director and Actor Taika Waititi). In the midst of his version of blind nationalism, Jojo encounters a young Jewish girl named Inge that his mother (Scarlett Johansson, also Oscar-nominated here) is hiding in the attic. At first weary of one another, the two become friends and Jojo starts to see the Nazis in a new light.

The film also stars familiar faces Sam Rockwell, Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen, and Thomasin McKenzie to name a few.

Jojo Rabbit is presented in a 2160p HEVC/H.265, HDR (10; Ultra HD Premium)-enhanced Ultra High Definition image on 4K UHD disc with stunning HDR and a widescreen presentation of English: DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) lossless 5.1 mix. The film is beautifully photographed and its on full display here with even more detail seen in the HDR. While I'm surprised there wasn't a 7.1 or Atmos sound mix on the disc, the DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix works fine considering the nature of the film. Also included is a standard 1080p Blu-ray disc with similar visual and audio specs and a digital copy.

Special Features include:

Deleted Scenes: "Imaginary Goring", "Little Piggies", and "Adolf Dies Again"
