Big Fish (2003/Sony 4K UHD w/Blu-ray)

4K Picture: A 1080p Picture B+Sound: A Extras: B Film: B+

Tim Burton's wonderful film, Big Fish (2003), is finally available on the 4K UHD format. Starring Ewan McGregor and based on a book by John August, the film centers on one man's wild imagination and a son trying to figure out what parts of his father's life were real and what parts were completely fabricated while his old man is on his death bed. Considered by many as Burton's last really great film, although I would fight them and say that Sweeney Todd and The Demon of Barber Street was, it is apparent that so many years later the film still holds up and is brought to new life on the 4K Ultra HD format with a great new transfer.

Big Fish stars the late Albert Finney, Billy Crudup, Jessica Lange, Danny DeVito, Marion Cotillard, Steve Buscemi, Alison Lohman, the late Matthew McGrory, and Helena Bonham Carter.

The film is presented in 2160p on 4K UHD disc with native 4K resolution with HDR10 (high dynamic range) and a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85:1, then paired with lossless audio mixes in English Dolby Atmos 12-track, Dolby TrueHD 7.1 (48kHz, 24-bit), and DTS-HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 (48kHz, 16-bit). It is notable that this is a new 4K transfer that has been struck from the original 35mm camera negative and even the new 1080p Blu-ray which is also included, has been sourced from this new transfer as well.

I think the studios need to keep turning out these Tim Burton films on 4K UHD as the results are always positive. His films have always been stylistically solid and very fun to watch even if some are better than others. Big Fish is a great movie that you can enjoy with your family, and is relatable if you have a dad with a big imagination (as I do.)
