Tim Burton's Corpse Bride 4K (2005/Warner 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray w/Blu-ray)

4K Ultra HD Picture: A Sound: A Extras: B Film: B+

Tim Burton's second feature length stop motion animated feature, The Corpse Bride (2005) land on 4K UHD for it's 20th Anniversary. The marvelous musical once again brings Danny Elfman's unforgettable music to life through the imagination of Tim Burton with innovative and flawless animation that looks gorgeous in ultra high definition.

Featuring the voice talents of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Lee, and many others, the film has become a Halloween classic over the years for fans young and old.

When the film first opened in theaters it wasn't met with the same level of enthusiasm as The Nightmare Before Christmas, Burton's first stop motion animated feature, as that film is a masterpiece. However, I don't think Burton's intent was to ever compete with that film. The Corpse Bride is very different and less reliant on musical numbers than its predecessor. The unusual romance has never looked better than it does here in this 4K UHD release in this new 4K restoration that far outshines the previous home video releases.

The Corpse Bride 4K is presented in 2160p on 4K UHD disc with HDR10, an HEVC / H.265 codec, a widescreen aspect ratio of 1.85 X 1 and a lossless Dolby Atmos (Dolby TrueHD 7.1 mixdown for older systems) audio track. This is a new restoration and the best the film has ever looked in incredible color and details that really pop and give you a new level of appreciation for the quality of the stop motion animation. Seeing these films on the 4K UHD format are really great demo discs for the format I would also suggest A Nightmare Before Christmas and the Coraline 4K UHDs if you are a fan of this one. All are worth the upgrade!

Special Features include two new featurettes as well as archival that got ported over from the previous releases:

New: Digging up the Past: The Minds Behind "The Corpse Bride"

New: "'Til Death Do Us Art": A "Corpse Bride" Reflection

Danny Elfman Interprets the Two Worlds

Inside the Two Worlds of The Corpse Bride

Making Puppets Tick

The Animators: The Breath of Life

The Corpse Bride Pre-Production Galleries

Tim Burton: Dark vs. Light

Voices from the Underworld

and The Voices Behind the Voice.

There is also a steel book version available from select retailers.

The film is a masterfully made stop motion animated film that has grown in popularity over the two decades since it's initial release in theaters. While it doesn't have the longevity of The Nightmare Before Christmas, that is a hard act to follow. This eye popping 4K UHD upgrade is well worth checking out. Let's hope Frankenweenie and James and the Giant Peach land on the format soon!

For an earlier look at the film, try our coverage in the obsolete HD-DVD format, using the same Hd master as the older Blu-ray edition:
