Fatboy Slim: Big Beach Boutique 2

Picture: B-†††† Sound: B+†††† Extras: C+†††† Film: B

Somewhere on the very fine line that separates techno and dance music are artists like Fatboy Slim.It has always been strange to look back over periods of music and compare the music scene in Europe to that of the U.S.Americans are baffled by the successes of certain DJís that are able to manipulate and sample the work of other artists and become mainstream in doing so.So itís no surprise that when someone like Norman Cook (AKA Fatboy Slim) puts on a free concert the result is 250,000 piling up on Brighton Beach for the spectacle Big Beach Boutique II.

Captured here for this DVD, Fatboy Slim manages to reach deep into his collection and mixes together a heap of material for this all-out party. The songs compiled here range from artists like X-Press 2 to All Saints.Even some of Fatboy Slimís own material is thrown into the mix as well.

Shot in DV the picture quality is shifty, which is a typical problem of this format, which is more of a consumer-based product. It works well here at times, but as the concert goes on and as the sun sets the picture quality starts to suffer and the blacks become a problem.Although this is an anamorphic 16X9 presentation the film was not shot like that, so it was later cropped off and enhanced for DVD playback.Too bad this concert did not cost a few bucks then it could have been shot in High Definition with all that money coming in.

The concert comes with three audio options with the DTS 5.1 mix being the favorable of the three. This is the only engaging audio option that is capable of capturing all the low and high-end material with a better edge over the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix.Obviously with this type of material there is always a large bass presence, which feels neglected in many ways on the Dolby mix, but is more prominent in the DTS mix.Even when the DTS mix is working at its best there are limitations throughout, which are typical of live shows.Crowd noise and balancing the channels is always a problem in trying to make the presentation seem authentic yet allowing the music to pierce through with the fullness and magnitude it deserves.††

Extras are somewhat plentiful considering the material here. There is a full-length commentary, an interview that runs 9:33, and two interactive games. There is also a section that allows you to pick and choose how you want to arrange the order of the songs. There is also a hidden menu, which you must enter a three-digit code. This code can be acquired by luckily guessing for hours on end or simply by going to www.bigbeachboutique.com. Once you have this correct code you can then access a documentary, which runs 23:54. There are also some fun games to play as well as some multi-angle material as well to mess around with.Let it be known that this material is all designed for more entertainment.

Whether you are a true fan of this genre of music or just a lover of parties this is the Beach Party to experience if you were not one of those thousands of people that captured it live. This will have to do for now, but luckily Eagle Vision has presented the material in a admirable, enjoyable DVD edition that allows us from the comforts of our home to enjoy one of the biggest concert parties every captured.
