Digital Underground Raw Uncut

Picture:  C-     Sound: C-     Extras:  D     Documentary: C

One of the Features on Digital Underground  - Raw Uncut is a music video produced by No Budget Records.  Ironically the producer’s name speaks volumes about this DVD as a whole.  The entire DVD production is undoubtedly one big after thought. Could the Digital Underground have had someone with a camcorder follow them around for several years recording segments for the group’s personal use and then one day decided to capitalize on the really awful footage that had been shot?   That is surely what happened. . .and the DVD was thrown together, some additional interviews were recorded, really terrible graphics were included, and Digital Underground Raw Uncut was packaged and placed on shelves for sale.

Unlike the previous DVD I reviewed, Snoop Dogg’s Puff Puff Pass Tour, I believe this Music Documentary at least tells a story that a fan of the artist can be interested in.  A compilation of the Digital Undergrounds successes and failures are accounted for on this DVD that barely helps it overcome its poor production value.  Another miss for this DVD is that throughout the documentary the members of the Digital Underground discuss several of their music videos that helped them gain public exposure, however; those videos are nowhere to be found on the DVD.  It’s hard to relate to what someone is talking about without a visual representation of the subject being discussed.

The video quality is poor; however, it is hard to tell how poor the source material really is because the quality of the original video is masked using filters and effects to compensate for its inferior quality.  These visual effects do not enhance the quality one bit and in fact do a great job of taking the viewer totally out of the story.  Special Features on this Disc include a photo gallery, music video, and live concert footage. . .none of which make this DVD a must buy.  The core audience of this disc will be longtime fans of the Digital Underground, but I do not recommend this for anyone who plans to become a fan.
