Sky – Live In Concert: Bremen, Germany – 1980

Originally made for the German TV series Music Laden, the Jazz Acoustic and Fusion band Sky from the late 1970s perform a solid-if-short concert (under 45 minutes) under the DVD release title Sky – Live In Concert: Bremen, Germany – 1980.  Quantum Leap has once again stepped up to the plate to issue interesting music that might not otherwise get issued on DVD.  Accompanied by Australian member John Williams, the guitarist who happens to have the same name as the famous motion picture music composer, the songs are as follows:

1)     Westway

2)     Carrillion

3)     Cavatina (Theme from The Deer Hunter)

4)     La Danza

5)     Gymnopede No. 1

6)     Cannonball

7)     Where Opposites Meet, Parts 1 – 5

We had recently looked at the terrific new double set of The Deer Hunter and decided to save the specifics on the theme song.  Sky and Williams did the original version of track 3 that Cimino personally chose for the classic, while Capitol Records’ The Specials had a hit version with a slightly more Country flavor.  Both are good, but I do favor the original a bit.

Kevin Peek (electric guitar), Herbie Flowers (electric bass), Francis Monkman (keyboards) and Tristan Fry (drums) round out the original members here.  All the music and performances are really good, which is why the soft analog PAL 1.33 X 1 image and compressed-sounding Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono are such a disappointment.  From the same show and time period, Classic Pictures has issued compilations form the show in the 1970s and 1980s (reviewed elsewhere on this site) with clear video transfers and 5.1 DTS mixes of the original audio.  What did they get their hands on that Quantum Leap missed?  Who knows, but the concert is good enough to catch just the same.

Extras are few, including previews for other Quantum Leap product and text on both the band and its members.  This is a band worth rediscovering and hopefully Sky – Live In Concert will inspire more releases.
