Angel On My Shoulder (Roan Group)

Angel On My Shoulder is the last film of the successful Hollywood director Archie Mayo.  It pits Paul Muni (known for gangster roles) against Claude Rains as Satan and Anne Baxter as the female lead.  Part of it takes place in the afterworld and the film has been a favorite of fans of older Hollywood films, but I was never a fan.  After looking at a previous version a good few years ago, I think the film has actually become worse!

At best, it is a corny curio and nothing more.  The stars save the picture from being a total disaster and they are the only reason to see it, if that.  The 1.33 X 1 image is about on par with al the other releases of this film on DVD to date, with limited detail, Video Black issues and an aged print.  The Roan print is a bit better than the others we have seen, but the transfer is mixed, as is the Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono, which is a few generations down.  Lloyd Kaufmann and legendary journeyman director Vincent Sherman do on camera interviews as repeats from other Roan DVDs.  That is still better than the lack of bonuses on most editions.
