John Kay & Steppenwolf In Concert – Rock ‘N’ Roll Greats

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Concert: C

It is sad when a once great Rock classic like Born To Be Wild is played out into oblivion and pop trivialization, but that is sadly what happened to the song by the 1980s and especially the 1990s.  Considering their hits spanned from 1968 to 1971, with a brief hit in 1974, the band is in a new configuration and touring.  This installment of the mixed Rock ‘N’ Roll Greats series has the band with original lead singer John Kay in tow, but hit like Born To Be Wild, Magic Carpet Ride and Rock Me do not have the energy they used to, nor is Mr. Kay’s voice at its best.  The band is trying to entertain in general, though.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1/16 X 9 image is weak on Video Black and detail, but has some good color.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is weaker than usual, which has been par for the course in this series.  There are no extras.  The combination is as disappointing as the concert, but diehard fans may enjoy it.
