Biréli Lagrene – Gipsy Project: Live In Paris

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C     Concert: B-

Biréli Lagrene and the Gipsy Project return to DVD with more laid back Jazz with fancy touches Live In Paris concert taped October 8th 2004, a few years after the last Gipsy Project DVD we covered elsewhere on this site.  Instead of two parts, this DVD has a PAL format side and an NTSC format side, both region free.  Just off the bat, the PAL side has poorer sound, as both sides are offered in Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo with no surrounds again.  Both sides are letterboxed 1.78 X 1, with the NTSC only being very slightly softer than the PAL side.  The one hour, 45 minutes long show offers only three repeats of the previous program, including:

  1. Donna Lee
  2. Danse Norvegienne
  3. Un Certain Je Ne Sais Quo
  4. Cherokee
  5. Nuages
  6. Mimosa
  7. Victor
  8. Place Du Tertre
  9. Clair De Lune
  10.  Troublant Bolero
  11.  Hungaria
  12.  Minor Swing
  13.  Move
  14.  Solo
  15.  Freedom Jazz Dance
  16.  Isn’t She Lovely

The documentary is not bad, but the concert is just not up to how good the previous taping was.  This one seems a little flatter and the audience reacting oddly-if-favorably throughout.  Extras include a discography and 27 minutes-long documentary.  This one can only be recommended if you really like the first one that much.  Otherwise, stick with the Live Jazz A Vienne.
