Starship Operators Volume 02 - Memories

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C     Episodes: C+

Starship Operators continues with Volume Two - Memories, and though there is still some interesting animation, the melodrama is beginning to overtake the action in the following episodes:

5/6) Great Escape (two parts)

7/8) Stardust Memories (two parts)

If doing two parters as a way to beef up the show is an attempt to shake the shadows of the many Sci-Fi and Animé programs before it that make this familiar territory, it just does not work.  I give the makers credit for being ambitious, but this direction just causes the better aspects fop the show to get grounded down and fragmented instead of taking on the TV grid on more directly.  One should definitely start with the first DVD before going on to this one.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1/16 X 9 image is good, but the animators cannot resist softening the image with bleaching whites in shots that are supposed to equal realism when the conjure cliché.  It is softer this time and that does not help.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo with Pro Logic surrounds in either English or Japanese are healthy and enveloping.  Extras include trailers for this and three other Geneon DVD releases, Pre-broadcast “TV ComMercial” Collection and a promo video for live events with music sunk up to animated footage.  All are brief.
