The Andy Griffith Show Collection (Passport)

Picture: C     Sound: C     Extras: C+     Episodes: C+

Passport has done an interesting job of issuing obscure TV shows, but when it comes to more popular titles, they tend to offer the second or third best sets.  In the case of their Andy Griffith Show Collection focusing on the black and white years with the late Don Knotts, the (1.33 X 1) prints are not in great shape and (Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono) sound is also inferior, especially as compared to the exceptional full seasons Paramount has issued on DVD already.  You can read about those elsewhere on the site.

What is different is that the extra on the fifth and final DVD include interviews with Griffith, actress Betty Lynn and a Hollywood Remembers segment on Griffith that diehard fans might enjoy.  This is a less expensive set than the better Paramount releases, meaning it would not be bad if you don’t want all those sows, but the extras are the only reason to pick this one up.
