The Thief Lord

Picture: C     Sound: B-     Extras: C-     Film: C-

The Thief Lord (2005) is yet another lame cashing in on anything Harry Potter, though without the budget or original ideas.  The title character (aka Scipio) never delivers much magic and “be happy now” music with an obviously low budget does not help.  He is a Robin Hood type with “lost children” all over the place and mean adults in the way.  The long 98 minutes eventually become a compendium of everything we have seen before and you are better off watching Steven Spielberg’s Hook.  Poor Vanessa Redgrave got talked into doing this, but they even waste her.

The anamorphically enhanced 2.35 X 1 image is better than the awful pan & scan version, but is still weak in color and detail, clichéd in its gutting of color.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix tries to be “magical” with whipping pans that do not impress.  Extras include the trailer and deleted scenes that make no difference.
