Reuben Hoch & Time – Of Recent Time (CD)

Sound: B-     Music: B

Reuben Hoch & Time are a Jazz trio consisting of Reuben Hoch (drums), Ed Schuller (bass) and Don Friedman (Piano) performing choice Jazz instrumentals.  I liked the following selections, though I wish they had sounded different:

  1. Beatrice
  2. Question and Answer
  3. Unrequited
  4. Ballad for Nori
  5. Turnaround
  6. Poem for no. 15
  7. Flamands
  8. Yes and No

The second track is a Pat Metheny piece, while the last is another from Wayne Shorter, a favorite of Jazz musicians.  Though I enjoyed the album, there was the performance of the recording that stood in the way of my enjoyment.  The PCM 2.0 16bit/44.1kHz Stereo is credited as “a True Stereo recording by Ken Christianson, Pro Musica, Chicago” and though it is no doubt stereo, it is also limited in depth and clarity.  This comes from a bit too much compression throughout and spoiled the otherwise fine performances.  A booklet with liner notes is included.  You can go to http://www.thenaimlabel.co.uk/artists/hoch_cd088.htm for more details about this album, download music clips and learn more about the Naim record label.
