Marcus Miller In Concert (Ohne Filter)

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C+     Concert: B-

The accomplished Jazz bassist Marcus Miller is a musician’s favorite, but does not always get the attention his talents deserve, but his June 6th 1994 concert for the German concert TV series Ohne Filter gives him an hour to jam and he does with four long tracks as follows:

1)     Rampage

2)     Panther

3)     Steveland

4)     Scoop

5)     Tutu

6)     Ju Ju

In some ways the concert is just not long enough, while in other ways, this critic wanted to hear a different kind of set.  Either way, as the show always has been, it offers a good showcase of his talents and the kind of exposure he is more than worthy of.  Jazz and Soul fans will be particularly happy with this volume, at least as far as the content goes.

The 1.33 X 1 full frame image was shot on professional analog PAL video and is fuzzier than one might like, though color is not bad.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix and PCM 2.0 16bit/48kHz Stereo are about even, with the concert showing its age more than expected.  Besides repeating the same stereo cords ad placement, other DVDs in the series, and Ohne Filter producer interview, it has a good biography of Miller.  Overall, it is a decent concert, if not the best audio/video performer in the Ohne Filter series on DVD-Video.
