Chick Corea & Gary Burton – Live At Montreux 1997

Picture: C+     Sound: B+     Extras: D     Concert: B

The 1997 Montreux concert of Chick Corea and Gary Burton is a real winner, with extended Jazz jams on seven tracks and two consummate artists in rare form at the same time, so in tuned with each other that it is nothing short of remarkable.  Chick Corea & Gary Burton – Live At Montreux 1997 is the latest in the serious roll out of concerts in the series from Eagle Eye and no concert series in video history has come up with so many gems so often.

The songs performed are:

1)     Love Castle

2)     Native Sense

3)     No Mystery

4)     Tango ‘62

5)     Rhumbata

6)     Four In One

7)     La Fiesta

This is so good, that it will be hard for even non-Jazz fans not to be compelled by the music and the state of pure music the performers work themselves into so seamlessly.  It is like watching the results of some innovative music lab in action, but it is never that clinical, with subtle heart and soul fusing with proficiency and skill most musicians only dream of.  It only lasts 63 minutes, but they are very rewatchable and that is why this is such a great disc.  Then there is the playback performance.

The 16 X 9/1.78 X 1 image is a little soft, but I liked the colors just the same, but the real highlight is the sound.  Though PCM 2.0 16bit/48kHz Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound mixes are included, the DTS 5.1 mix is so amazing that it is one of the best Eagle has ever issued.  Between the fullness and richness of the sound, articulation of the instruments, smart mix and overall soundfield, Jazz and music fans will find it referential.  We have heard many sound mixes, but few put you there like this one does.  Why can’t more mixes be this good?  I don’t know, but it is amazing and so good that you will not care that there are no extras.
