Lionel Hampton is a legend, but in later years, major
artists take interesting risks and try new things. There Will Never Be Another You is a new CD featuring
guess vocalist Sylvia Bennett, who sings in the almost too-happy style of most
jazz vocalists we have been hearing from lately. The tracks include:
- Just
One Of Those Things
- There
Will Never Be Another You
- Cookin'
In the Kitchen
- Sweet
Man of Mine
- Beulah's
Boogie
- Bill
Bailey
- It
Might As Well Be Spring
- Together
- Red
Top
- Please Love Me
- Someday
- You Make My Heart Sing
- You Make My Heart Sing - Remix
The strange this is his great xylophone playing is as
great as ever, while Miss Bennett’s vocals seem more restricted and
comparatively… artificial? At least
there is a joy to her performance, but the two never cohere and it becomes a
strange experience. It is even stranger
with the technical performance.
The 1.33 X 1 image on the DVD is soft and an amalgamation
of several NTSC sources, but the newer footage should not look as bad. The PCM 2.0 16bit Stereo is not bad, and
about the same, with 44.1kHz on CD and 48kHz on DVD. Both are a bit harsh and shrill, which would be understandable on
the DVD, but not CD. There are no
extras.
