Saiyuki Reload - Gunlock Vol. 2

Picture: B-     Sound: B-     Extras: C     Episodes: B

Summary: There was a time when people lived in peace with demons and the supernatural.  Suddenly there was a change; the demons and the supernatural began attacking the people.  It is said that the revival of Gyumaou (Demon King) is the cause. Heaven sends Genjou Sanzo, a high ranking priest that carries a gun, smokes and has a foul temper with 3 wise cracking, but powerful demon/friends to stop Gyumaou.

This is the second DVD installment in the series Saiyuki Reload - Gunlock.  The story is based on a well-known story in Asian countries "Journey to the West."  This series is filled with pretty boys with bad attitudes with angst and a bit comedy thrown into a seemingly ancient world with mystics, magicians, demons and cars.  Thought the stories have been told and redone, the episodes were a lot of "What is the moral of the day?" along with a few laughs along the way.  Being the characters aren't exactly the nicest of people nor would you want see them as role models for kids but it has an attitude of live fast, die young and leave a beautiful looking corpse.

I felt a lot of this was rushed when created and the animation and plot could of used a bit more development, but then there are entertaining moments that try to be heartfelt or have something deep meaning... but in all I took it lightly.

---------------------------------------------------------

Episode 5: Combat

Goku is stuck alone fighting Kougaiji.  Only thing is Kougaiji seems to be brainwashed in to an absolute killer without mercy, pain or morals, how is Goku supposed to stop without it getting fatal?

Episode 6: Awakening

With Kougaiji brainwashed he seems unstoppable, even heavily hurt he doesn't seem to care.  Kougaiji's minions however don't seem to like this 'new' Kougaiji, will the bond of friendship awaken Kougaiji, and who side will they be standing on?

Episode 7: Cursed Board Game

Being on the road for a long time Sanzo and company finds hotel in the middle of nowhere, but without food, booze or cigarettes the gang tries to kill time with a board game... only thing is they can't stop playing until the reach the end or they do.  Will the four be able to break the curse?

Episode 8: The Red-hair Woman

A beautiful woman, a lonely man... Gojyo claiming ever to be the ladies man spies a beautiful girl he saw in a bar.  Little does he know more than looks can kill.  Will Gojyo 'survive' this relationship?

---------------------------------------------------------

The 1.33 X 1 image color images have better animation than is typical for TV Animé, but this is not as sharp or as clear as the best block style Animé DVDs, though it sometimes comes close and more so in this DVD than the first.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo has Pro Logic surrounds like the original series but not the regular Saiyuki Reload and is here in English and Japanese.  Extras are not much, but include the usual three other Geneon trailers and clean, textless versions of the opening and closing of each show.
