The Berenstain Bears – Discover School!

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Episodes: C+

I always found The Berenstain Bears to be decent children’s fare, but not the homerun of other such franchises.  However, it is still quality product and has some entertainment value, though it is clearly geared towards a taste towards what is perceived as a Country/Southern entertainment audience, though children do not always make such distinctions.  Between the Lee Ann Womack theme song, throwback to Ma & Pa Kettle and a certain sense of simplicity, I was surprised how progressive some of the shows were in this new Discover School release.

With titles like The Excuse Note, On The Job, The Giddy Grandma, The Bad Habit, Draw It and The Female Fullback.  Far from any political agenda, the show is a throwback to some of the simpler animated shows that started surfacing in the late 1970s after the Saturday Morning market had been all built up.  That makes them safe, yet more limited even at their best.  If you or your children love the characters, than this should make you happy.  If you have never heard of them, this is as good a place as any to start.

The 1.33 X 1 image is good for a full-frame animated presentations, though colors are not as vibrant as on some productions.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is also just fine, though has not surrounds and is not particularly distinct.  There are no extras.
