Greg Smith – Above The Clouds (CD)

Sound: B     Music: B-

I would not go as far as to say that Greg Smith’s new Jazz Instrumental CD Above The Clouds is a concept album, but its 14 tracks are personal and wide-ranging.  The compositions go back to the 1970s according to Smith, who has a list of explanations for each song in the paper foldout so the listener can get an idea of what he is going for.  It is not a bad album, though some tracks work better than others and when they don’t work or go on too long, the album drags.  Fortunately, those spells usually do not last too long.

The PCM 2.0 16bit/44.1kHz Stereo is not bad, without any major harshness or strident issues, though it might be slightly bass heavy.  It is a technically competent recording, so even when the music is not great, it at least sounds good.  You can go to www.gregsmithguitar.com and learn more.
