Conviction – The Complete Series

Picture: C+     Sound: B-     Extras: C-     Episodes: B

A spin-off of Law & Order – Special Victims Unit, Conviction (2006) sadly got buried under the public finally getting somewhat tired of several versions of one show.  In the old days, spin-offs used to have new names and I guess this solid court drama was found guilty of that.  Stephanie March brings her fine Alexandra Cobot role as the head prosecutor in the D.A.’s office and is joined by a solid cast of actors and characters.  This includes Eric Balfour as aggressive Prosecutor Brian Peluso, Jordan Bridges is newcomer Nick Potter and made the end of endless jokes, Milena Govich is young Assistant D.A. Jessica Rossi in a hot affair off the bat, Anson Mount is young prosecutor Jim Steele who is the other participant and not necessarily happy with all going on in the office, Julianne Nicholson is the conscionable Christina Finn and J. August Richards is passionate fellow Prosecutor Billy Desmond.

The reason I list the main stars is because they are so good that they are the best cast creator Dick Wolf has assembled since the original Law & Order at least and the lack of patience is the only thing that killed this show at 13 episodes because it broke the formula mode enough of all the previous spin offs.  The cast has great chemistry and this show went by so fast that most people missed it.  Though the comedy was not as broad as Boston Legal, it still had plenty to offer in an intelligent L.A. Law way.  If you want to see yet another good TV show ended in its early prime and like good TV, you must see this great show.  NBC made a huge mistake dropping the show and especially if you have watched every single other version of Law & Order, how can you possibly miss this one?

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is some and has subdued color, likely shot in digital High Definition of the moment, but is not as obnoxious as it could be making it more watchable.  The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is more like it for such a TV show, and a little better than Boston Legal.  The only extra is seven character profiles, but there was more to say about this show.  Sadly, we may never hear about it.  Hope we see more of these actors in any event.
