Greg Chako – Two’s Company, Three’s A Crowd Jazz Duets + Where We Find Ourselves (CD and double CD set)

Sound: B     Music: B-/B

The Jazz guitarist Greg Chako has come up with two new CD releases.  One is interesting and mixed, while the other is even more ambitious and wide ranging.  Two’s Company, Three’s A Crowd is the often mixed-result duets album that works best when instrumental.  Although Andrea Hopkins has a fine voice, these songs are not always good and her attempt in particular to cover the David Gates & Bread classic If is nothing short of a disaster.  It is just not a song anyone should cover, because they are bound to failure.

Where We Find Ourselves is a double CD set recorded in Japan and is somewhere in the middle of an extended jam session and carefully recorded studio effort.  All the songs are relatively original, though they are also answer songs to other songs, or revisionist variants thereof.  Not bad.

The PCM 16Bit/44.1kHz 2.0 Stereo sound is good on both, though I give Ourselves the edge in sonic clarity and articulation.  You can go to www.gregchako.com for more information on both and find out more for yourself.
