The BIAS
Project is Rodrigo Ferrari-Nunes’ compilation tribute album which also happens
to have a group of other savvy, talented musicians joining in. Instead of a tribute to one person, it is to
six Jazz giants, including John Coltrane and Charles Mingus. He is joined by five others on various tracks
but the tributes and though I have never heard of them, they are all good.
The
problem is, and this is a minor one, there is no focus and the tribute angle
just seems like a fancy label and somewhat faux excuse to cover the songs in
the first place. I know some of this is
about ethnic pride and I do not doubt the total sincerity of that. However, after endless jazz CDs with covers,
it does not seem as distinct.
The PCM
2.0 16Bit/44.1kHz Stereo is good though, nicely recorded by Ferrari-Nunes, so
