Joe Lovano Nonet – New Morning: The Paris Concert

Picture: C+     Sound: B-     Extras: C     Concert: B-

Joe Lovano is a saxophonist who has not always been front and center, but looking at his history, he seems to find that as interesting as the experimentation and variances he has had throughout his career.  This performance of one of his Nonet assemblies from February 19th 2001 is accurately described as a “big band” sound in a comparatively smaller ensemble.  Joe Lovano Nonet – New Morning: The Paris Concert continues a long line of releases from this DVD series.

The tracks include:

1)     On A Misty Night

2)     If You Could See Me Now

3)     Hot House

4)     Theme For Ernie

5)     Charlie Chan

6)     Good Bait

7)     Embraceable You

8)     Abstractions on 52nd Street/52nd Street Theme

9)     Focus

He and his Nonet are good, but he material is a bit mixed overall and muddies the concert a bit.  Running over 90 minutes, it is still good, but not necessarily great.  The band has the energy, but the final result is one where much of it did not stick with me and I was impressed only to a point.

The 1.33 X 1 image is soft and shot on analog video, though color is not bad for its age.  The sound is here in decent PCM 16bit/48kHz 2.0 Stereo, which is a little clearer than the Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 mixes, which sound compressed as the audio is just too old and limited for such remixes.  The only extra is a Lovano interview worth catching, but that is all.  For diehard Jazz fans only.
