Bob Brozman – Live In Germany

Picture: C+     Sound: B-     Extras: C     Concert: B

Bob Brozman is an amazing musician, singer and performer.  After all the hype about talent on often silly contest shows, when you see a full-fledged veteran in action, it is amazing.  This Live In Germany concert was taped on December 6th, 2005 and features the following tracks:

1)     Down The Road

2)     Rattlesnake Blues

3)     Hawaiian Heat Waves

4)     Debussy A LA Reunion

5)     Jinx Blues Hop

6)     Neuro Training Box

7)     One Steady Roll

8)     Love In Vain

9)     Guitar Anthropology

10)  Death Comes Creepin’

11)  Death Calypso

12)  Hammock Blues

13)  La Vie En Rose

14)  Rolling Through This World

15)  Little Tough Guy Blues

The storytelling, showmanship, diversity, heart, soul and honesty of each piece is compelling, a bluesy voice that has as much depth as it has fun in its phrasing when he chooses to do so and his handling of the guitar is stunning.  Rarely do you see such effortless skills and smooth transitions with even the best guitarists around, but the melding of world music sensibilities with well-known genres like Blues opens up further possibilities for a man who already is one of the most diverse performers you could imagine.  If only the concert was longer!

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image was shot in on video and if it was HD, it has to be 1080i since the image has flaws that would not be an issue in a progressive scan format.  All the cameraman has to do is capture his amazing musicianship and that is what is done.  The sound is here in PCM 16bit/48kHz 2.0 Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 mixes, but the 5.1 versions are slightly limited.  However, this is not a bad recording, just not the best on the market.  Brozman deserves better and we hope he turns up in a newer concert or this comes out in an HD format with improvements.

Extras include informative guitar lessons, stills and a solid interview.  I wanted more, but this is a great introduction to an artist who is frankly brilliant and deserves a much wider audience than he currently has.  Bob Brozman – Live In Germany is one of the best concert DVDs of the year and if you love music, you really need to experience it.
