Paradise Kiss – Volume One

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C     Episodes: C

A high school girl named Yukari finds herself the subject of the interest of some mysterious people, who at first seem predatory.  It turns out they are part of a fashion junta who want her to join them as a model, something she eventually does after some consideration.  Paradise Kiss – Volume One begins a series that seems destined to have a short run, but is aimed at ages 16 and up, with the following shows:

  1. Studio
  2. Illumination
  3. Kiss
  4. George

I thought this was fairly good, but its confused and screwy start is just too problematic to be believed and makes the rest of the show highly unlikely.  However, if we skipped (edited out) the way Yukari gets together with this eccentric group, it still has its issues and limits.  Only serious Animé fans should apply.

The anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image is stylized in a way that takes away form definition and even color, but that is intended and the transfer is good.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo in English and Japanese has no Pro Logic surrounds.  The combination is fine, if not the best in an Animé series on DVD.  Extras include three previews for other Geneon product, character concept art, pres conference, photo shoot and TV ads for the show.
