Beerfest (HD-DVD)

Picture: B     Sound: B     Extras: C-     Film: C-

The sex/teen/gross-out cycle that was relaunched by American Pie adds another occasional entry with Jay Chandrasekhar’s Beerfest (2006) in its unrated version on HD-DVD.  It is the typical crazy situation with the expected obvious results, this time focusing on the title event, which is an underground version of Oktoberfest that actually has nations competing to drink each other under the table.  The only added fun is more nudity and topless women.  Germany is not quite the real Germany either, but then this is a silly comedy.

The 1080p 2.35 X 1 digital High Definition image has cartoonish colors on purpose as shot by Frank G. DeMarco, It is appropriate, but however the color was manipulated, it does cut into depth and detail somewhat.  The Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 mix is lively at best, but is loaded with silly sound effects and only delivers so much.  Extras include two audio commentaries (believe it or not), three featurettes, deleted scenes and the original trailer.

Ultimately, it does not become the next Animal House no matter what it does and with that John Landis film on HD-DVD (reviewed elsewhere on this site), this will remain a secondary curio at best with limited replayability.
