Black Lagoon V. 1 (Animé/Geneon/DVD-Video)

Picture: B-     Sound: B     Extras: C     Episodes: B

Okajima Rokuro a typical average business man gets caught by pirates "Black Lagoon."  But when his company leaves him for the sharks and leaves him for dead, he decides to instead join the pirates. He gives up his past and becomes 'Rock.'  Looking for a way to survive his new and dangerous world he is coached by his new crewmates Dutch, the shrewd Captain, Benny their communication/engineer, and finally the sexy but deadly gun loving Revy.  Together the sail the waters taking odd jobs or anything to earn them their next quick buck.

This is definitely an anime that is filled with action, danger and explosions. The anime is short, but well drawn with interesting and crazy situations.  If you crave action and constant danger then this is a good Animé.  Plenty of gun crazed bad guys.  The pirates sorta become the cool underdogs that you know even they are doing something illegal you are still rooting for them to win in a world that is more corrupt and crazy as they are.  So far there isn't any over all plot, but the series definitely develops interesting characters and each one with a story.

The Animé has excellent DTS 5.1 sound and decent Dolby Digital 5.1 sound quality mixes and sharp and well colored anamorphically enhanced 1.78 X 1 image quality.  Scenes are fairly well detail and have good graphics.  Extras include Behind the Scenes of the English Adaptation, "Red Fraction" Music Video (Performed by Mell), previews for other Geneon releases and Promotional Videos.  An upscale version with a metal case that will fit the future DVD volumes is also available.
