Silver Spoons – The Complete First Season

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Episodes: C+

Essentially Differ’nt Strokes with a white blond rich kid, Silver Spoons made Rick Schroder a heart throb of some kind and as silly as the concept was, became a hit for five seasons on NBC.  The Complete First Season is finally being issued by Sony, all 22 episodes of it and it is hard to believe this show ever existed.  Joel Higgins plays his rich, overgrown father facing bankruptcy in the pilot show when his son Ricky shows up out of nowhere.  An obvious comedy with pre-teen humor, Erin Gray plays the father’s assistant and they land up forming a surrogate family.

Gray was expected to be a big star thanks to the Gil Gerard Buck Rogers, but this show was shockingly more successful.  Jason Bateman, Joey Lawrence, Mr. T and even Sharon Stone turn up as guests, but the show simply has not aged well.  It is child safe enough for younger children, who might get bored at some of the 1980s references, but it is also nostalgia and that is the primary reason for its DVD arrival.

The 1.33 X 1 image is not bad for its age and was taped on professional analog NTSC video.  Color is consistent for the format and this translation is not too harsh.  The Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono is clean and clear considering its age and low TV standards for audio fidelity at the time.  There are no extras, but maybe next set.
