The Untouchables – Season One, Volume Two

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: C     Episodes: B

Paramount/CBS continues to roll out the first big non-Lucille Ball Desilu Productions hit The Untouchables concluding the first season in a 4-DVD set contained in a single sized DVD case.  The first set was welcome and impressive, as this link demonstrates:

This new set concludes with the same fine picture and sound as the first.  Desilu landed a big winner and the show holds up well.  The only difference with this set is the single, terrific extra included.  Long after this show ended, Lucy was still on top and The Lucy Show hit its very successful full color episodes.  This included a spoof of this show entitled Lucy The Gun Moll.  It is a fine show, typical of how underrated and funny the show was and why it was a hit.

In addition, fans who have suffered through dozens of awful, awful VHS, Beta and DVD copies in bad packaging with prints that are half-faded, seeing this new color print is a revelation.  The show has not looked this good since syndication in the 1970s and then some.  Color in the clean, pretty sharp and clear 1.33 X 1 frame is impressive and for the first time ever, you can see the money put into the show.  Though more extras would have been nice, this is a winner, just like the show.  Hope we get more with the next Untouchables seasons and that Paramount/CBS finally starts releasing The Lucy Show on DVD.
