Prison Break – Season One (Blu-ray)

Picture: B     Sound: B     Extras: C+     Episodes: C+

The hit Fox TV series Prison Break is so popular and key to them, that they have released Season One (2005 – 2006 Season) as their first TV on Blu-ray release.  We previously reviewed this first season, which you can read more about at:

The show continues to be a hit and despite some off-screen incidents that may or may not affect the show long term (from a star’s trouble with the law to the writer’s strike) depending on how they play out, the show is a hit.

The 1.78 X 1 AVC @18 MBPS digital High Definition image is a welcome improvement over the DVD set, which looked weak, but is still limited in detail and depth, in part because this was early HD shooting and it shows.  Even more interesting is the DTS HD MA (Master Audio) 5.1 lossless English soundtrack that outdoes the DVD’s standard Dolby 5.1, but also in its roughness gives us the best listen to the state of TV audio today for better and worse.  Dialogue is improved the most, but you can imagine that the mixers did not ever expect to see or hear these mixes in such higher fidelity.  The combination is decent, but not as good as the best TV on HD (like Smallville) we have seen to date.  We’ll see if the next Blu=ray season is better.

Oh, and the extras are the same as the DVD set.
