Crop Circles: Quest For Truth

Picture: C+     Sound: C+     Extras: B     Film: B

When people think about crop circles their first thought is of some farmer out in the middle of nowhere having some strange delusions.  Or they are thinking about a terrible movie called Signs, which attempted to create some sort of story around these sightings and pull together some sort of miracle ending, which needed a crane in order to hold everyone’s disbelief.

No matter what your thoughts are on crop circles the question that everyone tries to answer is who put them there?  That is not really the question that should be asked, but rather…why?  Some like to think that this is just a silly prank that is pulled randomly, but Crop Circles: Quest For Truth is a documentary that looks past that at some 20+ years of these sightings, which have come up all over the world in various spots and they all seem to have some connection to one another.  This certainly seems to be a prank that has gone too far.

Religion is an important factor when trying to decipher this mess as well.  For those that believe in God, that is the God that created the world and everything in it, should also not limit his power to create all over the universe.  Therefore, if God created life here on Earth, why not elsewhere?  If God did, why would those life forms try to contact us?  These crop circles that have been documented over the years have taken on various forms, been discovered in various placed, but all hold a few things in common.  The first common attribute is that they are symmetrical or have some pattern to them.  The crop that the forms are done in are also cyclical in shape, but the crops are never crushed or broken, but just matted down as if something landed on them, but did not put enough pressure to snap the crop.  This means that whatever caused these designs did so in a very meticulous, calculated, and planned way: thus, an intelligent being that goes far beyond some pranksters trying to say something.

If we suppose that other life is trying to communicate with us, why are they using these crop circles to do so?  This documentary never leads to that point, but rather focuses on the discoveries and various thoughts and views on the nature of the crop circles.  There are many intrigued by this especially since nothing has been solved even after all these years.  Crop Circles: Quest For Truth allows for some food for thought and makes for a great conversation piece afterwards.  Director William Gazeski (see Waco – The rules of Engagement, reviewed elsewhere on this site) has a definite skill for being able to pull together strong material and make for a well-researched and executed project.  The downfall is strictly in the fact that nothing is really solved, but some minds might be changed in one direction or another after watching.

The 1.85 X 1 transfer is pleasing given the various sources for this documentary.  The print has a slight softness, but overall is decent if not natural.  Detail and depth suffer from time to time and certain text is hard to make out in the background or foreground in the film. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo mix is fine and gives the material a strong enough voice.  There are a few extras that some might not expect on this disc including a trailer, additional footage, and interviews with the director.  All of this makes for a solid release for the subject matter.  Open Edge Media is the distributor responsible behind this and they have a winner on their hands that will hopefully lead to other successes in their future on the DVD format.
