The Royle Family – The Complete 2nd Season/Season Two (BBC DVD)

Picture: C     Sound: C+     Extras: D     Episodes: C

Some shows you get and some you do not and why The Royle Family is a hit is a mystery to me, but I have started with The Complete Season Two and I am not impressed one bit.  Maybe it is some post-Angry Young Man thing of some sense of “realism” as compared to goofy sitcoms, but the seven shows here did nothing for me and I guess it must be an acquired taste.  That even includes a Christmas Show.

Starting in 1998, the show lasted four seasons and short ones at that apparently, knowing when to quit while they were ahead.  Along with the occasional visits from “grandparent” Nana, the show is like every other show of its kind we have ever seen.  Except for being better than Mama’s Family, it is quickly forgotten.

The 1.33 X 1 image has motion blur and is not always easy to watch, while the Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo is simple and nothing to write home about.  There are no extras.
