The
Steven Soderbergh Ocean’s films are
so bad, yet so successful, that you can imagine why many similar films would
suddenly be greenlighted for production.
Joe Menendez’s Ladron Que Rob A
Ladron (aka To Rob A Thief)/2007)
is one such attempt to do a heist film with the comedy and wit. To be blunt, it is more entertaining than any
of that trilogy, if not by much.
So they
rob from the rich to become the rich, but there is something amusing about
seeing the storyline done by unknowns with more energy, enthusiasm, joy and fun
that the overrated equivalent. These
Hispanic actors, mostly unknown to the U.S. audiences, try to do this film
(running a brisk 100 minutes) with a pace that is meant to be
entertaining. Though some of it is, like
the other films, things we have seen before, I would rather watch this a few
more times than see the Soderbergh flicks.
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.85 X 1 image is a little softer than a new production
should be, but the print in clean and color consistent, while the Dolby Digital
5.1 mix lacks fullness throughout with dialogue not as well-recorded as it
could be. Extras include trailers,
featurette on making the score, featurette on making the film, audio commentary
with Menendez & Writer/Actor JoJo Henrickson and deleted scenes with
optional commentary. All are as
interesting as the film and worth a look.
