Unstable Fables: 3 Pigs & A Baby (Jim Henson/Weinstein DVD/Computer Animation)

Long
after the loss of Jim Henson, his company marches on, but despite his heirs in
creative control of some sort, the company and name is losing some of its
luster. With The Weinstein Company, they
are attempting a series of fairy tale send-ups called Unstable Fables, but it feels more like a very poor imitation of Fractured Fairy Tales and 3 Pigs & A Baby is a lame result.
Besides
coming across as Shrek-lite, even the third film in that franchise made a bunch
of money and we will see more often lame imitators of a franchise that is
stretching to the breaking point. Brad
Garrett, Jon Cryer, Steve Zahn and Jesse McCartney are the semi-knowns
supplying the voices, but it comes across like a bad telefilm that can do bad
CG and even worse jokes. Skip it!
The
anamorphically enhanced 1.78 x 1 image is soft, has color limits and the
animation does not look that good, especially now when some of the best CG work
to date is on Blu-ray. The Dolby Digital
5.1 mix is weak in soundfield, not well-recorded and dialogue can be weak. Extras include featurettes on doing the
voices, Animation Education and
(cringe!) Re-Imagining A Classic. Remember, when you hear the term reimagines
(with or without the hyphen) you are in deep trouble.
